Supernatural Result of Salvation
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25
If I were to ask a hand full of you to give me three synonyms for “happiness”, I imagine several of you would include “joy” on your list. However, biblical joy isn’t happiness, it is the supernatural result of salvation. Once we ask Jesus into our heart and accept his blood as the atonement of our sins, the Holy Spirit enters and dwells within us producing joy.
Joy, what is it? Joy is a feeling of pleasure and happiness dependent on Jesus rather than us or what is happening around us. Joy is from the Holy Spirit, being in God’s presence and hope in His Word. To experience the fullness of joy is to know Jesus. How do we get to know Jesus? Through reading his word and prayer. Making time daily to seek him. By spending time in his Word and prayer we strengthen our relationship and joy.
“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” —John 16:22 ESV
No one can rob you of joy if you have Jesus. In the face of hardship and heartaches you have the joy of knowing God and knowing that no matter the circumstance you will come through. As Christians, we should be exhibiting this joy. Not just when things are going well but when sorrow and pain enter our lives. We are not alone, and God is very much in control. We know that there is a greater joy coming. Why would someone want to become a Christian and accept Jesus if we do not share our joy? If we are grumbling, whining, fussing, and pouting we are focusing on earthly issues and not rejoicing in the Lord. We are not exhibiting the joy of the spirit to encourage others.
Joy is a habit that we as Christians should adopt. Living a joyful life is a choice. You can allow yourself to sink into the darkness and wallow in self-pity or you can let the joy of the Lord shine through. I have often allowed the circumstances around me to dictate my mood, emotions, and behavior toward others. When I think about that and I think of all the opportunities I missed. Because I did not cultivate joy, how many people did I discourage? Embrace the joy that dwells within your heart through Christ. Through all things look to him and be filled with hope and joy of what is to come.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. —Romans 15:13 ESV
