Isaiah 55:6
“Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near.”
My phone dinged. It was the pharmacy. My auto-renew prescription was ready.
Since our move earlier this year, the pharmacy is much further away. I don’t have a reason to go up in that area much. I don’t want to transfer it down here because—frankly—I don’t like that store. So I take the drive.
But I didn’t go that afternoon. I was really busy.
- Monday: I was tired after work and wanted to go home.
- Tuesday: I worked overtime and forgot.
- Wednesday: I just didn’t want to drive up there.
- Thursday: I just went home.
- Friday: Well, it’s Friday!!
- Saturday: My errands were in the opposite direction.
- Sunday: I never left the house.
Monday: I finally drove up there because I was out of the medication. I pulled up to the window and gave my name. The young lady came back.
“We don’t have anything waiting for you.”
I replied with the prescription name.
“Oh, yeah. It was returned. You didn’t come pick it up, so it went back into inventory. I can put in an order for it.”
“Yes. Please do that.”
I drove away. And as I did, I thought about how—if I had just stopped with the excuses and made the time and effort—I wouldn’t be without my prescription.
It reminded me of how often we do the same thing in our spiritual lives.
The Excuses We Make
We make a lot of excuses about seeking Jesus and choosing to follow Him. I was guilty of that before I made the decision to follow Him fully. All my reasons came down to one belief: I had time. I was young. I’d do it tomorrow.
How many times have I thought, I’m too tired to read my Bible?
Or I’ll just watch one more episode, and then I don’t really pray when I go to bed.
It’s so easy to make excuses.
So easy to not find a quiet place and open our Bibles.
So easy to leave the phone on and forget to pray.
James 4:14
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
James emphasizes the fleeting nature of life and the uncertainty of the future. No one knows how long they have. You have no guarantee of tomorrow.
A Gentle Challenge
I want to challenge you (and I’m going to do it too):
Make time every day to pray and read the Bible.
Let’s start today. Even if it’s just 10 minutes, devote it. Let it be a sacred pause—a breath of peace in your day. Over time, you’ll begin to crave that quiet, holy space where Jesus meets you.
“Seek the LORD while He may be found.”
