I’ve been dealing with some pretty rough neck pain lately. The kind that keeps you from sleeping, makes you move slow and think twice before turning your head. It has gotten bad enough, I finally made an appointment with a specialist.
I was telling my friend about my pain and the upcoming appointment. I told her I was praying that it was something simple.
She paused for a moment and then asked. “Why are you praying for it to be simple? Why aren’t you praying for healing?”
That landed in me in a way I didn’t expect. It made me realize how quickly I shrink my prayers down to what feels reasonable. I wasn’t asking God for healing. I was asking Him for the smallest version of help. Something tidy. Something that wouldn’t require too much from Him or too much hope from me.
Somewhere along the way, I started praying like God needed me to stay inside the lines. Like I shouldn’t ask for too much. Like I needed to protect Him from my disappointment.
But God isn’t limited by what feels likely. He isn’t intimidated by complexity. He isn’t waiting for me to choose the “appropriate-sized” request. He is the God who heals. The God who sees. The God who can do anything.
So I’m learning to pray bigger. Not because I’m guaranteed the outcome I want, but because I’m remembering who I’m talking to. The One who is not bound by my imagination or my caution.
And maybe the real healing begins when I stop limiting Him to what feels simple.
